Healing Strides of Va Saddles and Bluegrass Hoedown!!

The week before last we went to a fundraising event for Healing Strides of Va, which is where Avery goes for Hippotherapy. It's a wonderful place, and the people are just great! Avery was quite excited about going, but when we first got there....
...it was really cold! It was quite cold the whole time we were there, but we did have a lot of fun! This was when we first arrived. Brogan had fallen asleep on the way there, so Gabe stayed in the van with him to let him nap for a few more minutes, and Avery and I headed to the party! We sat and listened to the fun live bluegrass band for a little while, and she liked seeing someone playing a banjo like Daddy's, but then she was just too cold and needed to get moving, so we went for a walk.
Then Daddy and Brogan appeared, and we got some lunch and went to play some games. There were all sorts of games where you had to throw stuff. Bean bags into holes, balls to knock down pins, balls into buckets, ropes onto ladders, etc, etc. It was fun!
Brogan found his girlfriend :) Every week when while Avery's riding, Brogan plays with this sweet girl! She loves him, and he adores her too! It's cute!

Brogan found the dog amusing :)

We went to the petting zoo and saw super soft bunnies, and a giant dog, and a mini horse. Avery got to pet the chickens, and the chicken pecked the sleeve of her coat, which (thankfully!) she found quite hilarious and not scary!

The baby cow moved every time I tried to take a picture!
Brogan observing the chickens....

Someone came up with the idea of sitting him on top of the chicken cage, but of course all Brogan wanted to do was stick his little worm-like fingers inside...he didn't get to sit there for very long!

We won enough tokens for Avery to choose a big prize, and so we came away with this giant bunny and a little wind up furby thing! Both of which Avery adores :) Brogan likes the furby, but doesn't seen too interested in the bunny. Can you tell that they were exhausted???

Sick little boy

I have a sick little boy.
Yesterday morning he woke up with a fever of 102, and he spent the morning on the couch feeling very sorry for himself.
I thought maybe it was possible that it was just teething, because I hear that some children get a little bit of a fever when they're getting new teeth...
...but I didn't really think it was that, because, for one thing, Brogan doesn't normally get a fever with teething, and for another thing, he's been teething just about non-stop for a couple of months. (He's a very slow teether....he's got a nasty bruise where a molar is trying to come out....it's been there 2 months and there's still no tooth...poor baby.)
Also, you can see it in his droopy blue eyes that he just doesn't feel good.
I gave him motrin before I put him down for his nap, and that helped a little with the fever, but he still only slept for an hour.

Last night he woke up every single hour throughout the night. A couple of times he fell right back to sleep as soon as I picked him up and sat him on my lap in the glider. He was exhausted, but just couldn't stay asleep lying down.
I think it may be an ear infection.
So this morning we are going to see the doctor.
I read that sometimes doctors don't prescribe anything for pediatric ear infections. That won't work for me. I can't make it through an ear infection sans medication, so I certainly don't expect my child to do so.

Pediatric Therapies Fall Celebration!

Yesterday afternoon after church we went to Carilion's pediatric therapies fall celebration! It was a perfect day for an afternoon at the park, and we had a lovely time!
Avery wore her (unfinished) bird costume, but I realise now that we didn't take any pictures until she'd already taken it off. Oh well!
There was food...

Avery was happy about the hotdogs...

She coloured and decorated a picture of a pumpkin with Lisa.
And she hit a pinata! (Notice Brogan trying to join in....!)

She collected the loot!
Even after all the other children had abandoned the candy, she was still filling her pockets!

Brogan found a giant leaf.
He was quite proud of himself...!
They played in what is apparently the Roanoke Valley's largest handicapped accessible playground! It was pretty cool - a wheelchair could get around the whole thing!

Bridges have always been one of Avery's favourite parts of playgrounds, and apparently Brogan is a big fan of them too :)
I also have pictures from the fall fundraiser at the Hippotherapy place...I'll have to post those too.

Goodbye Ukrops

Yesterday Roanoke lost it's Ukrops.
I loved Ukrops because the atmosphere was great, and I felt like I was giving my money to a good family run company, the store brand cheddar cheese was better than any of the other store brands in Roanoke, and they've never opened on Sundays. How many stores still observe the sabbath day? Not many. They were also competative price wise, especially their weekly specials. I once stocked up on my canned vegetable food storage for 25 cents a can.
Avery ADORED Ukrops! Who knows why? Obviously not for the same reasons I did, but she really did! It was always an exciting moment when she spotted Ukrops from the van window and realised that we were going to UKROPS! While we shopped she loved running around the store saying things like "Ukrops! My crops! Your crops??" and pointing out all the signs with U's on them. "U for Ukrops and Umbrella!" She loved getting a little snack from the salad bar and LOVED going up in the elevator to the dining area upstairs to eat it!
Goodbye Ukrops! We will miss you! Especially Avery...

That boy...

One of the reasons I have to keep the bathroom door permanently closed these days....

That, and apparently the toilet is a super fun toy. Who knew....?
All these things that I never had to deal with when Avery was little!

Cousins!!!

A couple of weeks ago I got to spend some time with 4 of my cousins for the first time in over 3 years! They came to the states for 2 weeks, spent the first few days in New York, and then drove down to Roanoke and stayed with us for a few days, and then I got to spend some child-free time (Thank you Gabe!) with them in DC before they flew back to England!! It was SUPER DUPER FUN!!!! Here are just a few of the photos and videos from their visit. (I don't have photos from our DC visit...I only had my camcorder, and Talitha is going to email me the photos she took....*wink, wink, nudge nudge*)

I almost didn't post this next video.....but then I decided that the funny factor outweighed the embarrassment (I mean, seriously, singing Doris Day to a bar full of drunkards?? It was pretty funny!!!) So here it is....
